Bolivia

Bolivia is landlocked, so its seaborne trade moves through ports in neighboring countries: Arica and Antofagasta in Chile, and Ilo and Matarani in Peru. Toward the Atlantic, it uses river ports on the Tamengo canal, connected to the Paraguay-Paraná waterway.

Main seaports
  • Arica (Chile), transit port
  • Antofagasta (Chile), transit port
  • Ilo (Peru), transit port
  • Matarani (Peru), transit port
  • Puerto Aguirre, Gravetal and Jennefer, on the Tamengo canal (Paraguay-Paraná waterway)
Cargo airports
  • Viru Viru International Airport (Santa Cruz de la Sierra)
  • El Alto International Airport (La Paz)
Free zones and special regimes

Bolivia has commercial and industrial free zones, including those in El Alto, Oruro and Cobija; the General Customs Law defines them as areas where goods are considered outside the customs territory for customs duty purposes.

Good to know

  • The Bolivian Port Services Administration (ASP-B) handles Bolivian cargo at the ports of Arica, Antofagasta, Ilo and Matarani.
  • Road blockades can congest Bolivian cargo at transit ports; plan for safety stock and longer clearance times.
  • The National Tax Service (SIN) applies electronic invoicing through the SIAT platform, with mandatory adoption in phases by taxpayer group.
